Junior Byles
In the '70s Byles was nearly as popular as the Wailers and Burning Spear, due to one of the purest Rasta voices around -- not to mention a lethal combination of conscious and lovers themes in his lyrics. Though he had a string of hits for many of Reggae's major producers, "Curly Locks" has to be one of the best Reggae cuts ever recorded. Byles delivers the age-old tale of differences between a Rasta and an upper-class girl whose father doesn't want them to date. Byles' singing on the cut is like a quiet whisper over one of the warmest, organ-laden tracks ever recorded (courtesy of Lee "Scratch" Perry). The success of the song didn't last for Byles: he was reduced to poverty during parts of the '80s, though he's since begun recording and touring again.
